Today, I took the train up to NYC and participated in the Colon Cancer 15K Challenge. I left myself enough time so I didn’t have to rush to the race. I walked from Penn Station to Central park. I love the city in the early morning. It was almost peaceful. I got to the race early enough to see the 4 mile race start and part of the finish.
The 15K Challenge started at 10:15am. The hills were a challenge. My speedwork and tempo runs this week were tough so my goal for the race was to try for an 8 minute/mile pace. I finished in 1:13:00 with a 7:50/mile pace. I was 105/240 in my age group and 558/2347. The winning time was 46:42 (a 5 minute/mile pace!). My previous 15K race was 1:14:53 so this is technically a PR. The previous 15K was Indian Trails in Middletown, which is a beast of its own. We’ll see how I do there this year. The race is in two weeks.
Despite the Colon Cancer Challenge’s large size, I enjoyed myself. I broke my resolution to only run small races this year so that I could run the race with Dan. As it turns out, I didn’t see him until after the race. We got some food afterwards. It was great to catch up with him.
I left my camera on the kitchen counter so I had to use my camera phone, which meant no in-race photos. I doubt that I would have been taking too many photos during the race anyway. This was my first race wearing my garmin. It worked great. My splits for the race were: 8:39, 7:43, 7:54, 7:37, 7:58, 7:48, 7:52, 8:00, 7:20, 2:05
