Ice, Snow, slush, puddles, leaves, dirt, mud

December 28th, 2009 Posted in Hamilton Area Trail Runners, Trails, Training Runs

Last Saturday’s trail run had it all: Ice, Snow, slush, puddles, leaves, dirt, mud, wind and rain. I wore my new STABILicers Sport, which are cleats that strap on to the bottom of my running shoes. One of the advantages they have over YakTrax is that they can also be worn on gravel, concrete or sanded roads. I was happy with their performance on the slippery conditions. I deliberately ran in the snow & ice whenever possible. We covered 3 miles in tough conditions before one of the group fell and twisted his ankle, which quickly swelled up. We decided to walk back with him as a group instead of leaving him in the woods. It was a long 2.3 miles back to the parking lot. During the walk, one of my STABILicers slipped off my shoes. The instructions had mentioned that the additional velcro straps could be used to secure the STABILicers while hiking/walking. I’ll definitely use the additional straps next time. Luckily, when I discovered that it was missing, I only had a short run back to where it had fallen off.

    Where did you get them?
I could probably use them this winter.

Good luck in the hangover run!

    Looks like fun to me.

Those traction things must be pretty comfortable if you didn’t evev realize it was gone.

Except of course the part about the sprained ankle.

Nice mini review – I need to get something like this, since I’m good for one really good wipeout a season.

I recently tried the Yaktrax, and although they were pretty comfortable,I’m not sure that they are going to work that well for the mixed terrain around West Windsor. I’m concerned that, while good on packed snow and ice, there are usually portions of my runs where I’m on cleared paved paths or roads. Are the stabilicers better for the mix of snow, ice, clear patches?
