Today, I ran the Narberth 5 mile run which benefits Cystic Fibrosis. I was happy to have the redhead there to cheer the 700+ runners on. I’ve run this race twice before. The course (designed by a friend of ours) is quite challenging. There are a number of quick turns and modest hills as the course winds around the town of Narberth. Knowing the course helped me psychologically.
I lined up at the start in the middle to rear of the pack. I counted on the first mile congestion to slow my pace. As tempting as it is to be a rabbit, I wanted to save some energy for the rest of the race. I can’t say enough about the benefits of running with the HATR trail group. We ran plenty of hills over the winter and it helped me today. I attacked the hills with gusto. My favorite part of the race was the last mile. With the majority of the hills behind, it is fun to run fast at the end. I crossed the line with a chip time of 38:37, which, coincidentally, was my time from 2008.
My splits today were 8:45, 7:37, 7:33, 7:57, 6:45.
My 2008 splits were 8:04, 7:31, 7:45, 8:10, 7:07.
Today, I had a lot of energy in the tank at the end. I met my goal of finishing under 40 minutes. I didn’t meet my goal of negative splits the entire race, but I’m really happy with how the race turned out.
