Hamilton Hangover – Hamilton, New Jersey

January 1st, 2008 Posted in Running Races

When I awoke this morning, the rain was pouring against the skylight in our bedroom. I had doubts about the race at that point. Since the race was so close, I drove over early to get my t-shirt and bib number and then drove back home to chill. Thankfully, the rain stopped and the weather for the race wasn’t bad.

I tried my best New Year’s Eve–no hangover this morning. Champagne and Gatorade–the breakfast of champions.

Redhead fangirl and Phillygirl were awesome. They wore their New Year’s tiaras and had noisemakers. I saw them 4 times during the race. I heard them before I saw them. The other runners appreciated their spirit and enthusiasm. As we were walking back to our car, a runner stopped her car to tell them thank you and that they were great.

There was a one mile fun run before the 5 mile main event.

I lined up towards the back of the pack at the start. My goal was to run conservatively with a pace 8:30-9:00/mile.

As usual, I ran faster than I originally planned. I ran the first half of the race with a friend before he took off ahead of me. I didn’t get a chance to tell him, but he ran a great race. It was his first running race.

I sprinted the last tenth of a mile side by side with a 15 year girl. We finished with the same time: 40:24. My splits were: 8:50, 8:03, 8:01, 7:59, 7:31. Full race results can be found here.

The race was fun. I was happy to share it with the Redhead and PhillyGirl. It was a new course this year. I was surprised that there were no water stops. I’ve lost some conditioning with my recent low mileage, but I’m not that worried. This was a great way to start the new year.

Happy New Year!

Sounds like a fun race. Good Job. We got 11 inches of snow here, definitely be glad you didn’t have to run in that.
