Monster Dash 5K – Westampton, NJ
October 30th, 2004 Posted in Running RacesThis was my first running race since my return to running. The race benefited the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. It was pouring rain when I got out of bed, but the rain stopped by the race start. The Inaugural Monster dash 5K was a small race (55 entries) which was fine for me. A few runners wore costumes. There was the requisite Santa outfit, an elf or two, and a catwoman-like outfit. My favorite was Forrest Gump, who ran in a complete suit and carried a box of chocolates. True to his persona, the runner Forrest was very polite and pleasant. I chatted with him between miles 1 and 2. William, a friend from work, ran the race with me. Actually, when the race started he left me in the dust. I started with my target pace 8min/mile while he started at 6min/mile pace with the leaders. I caught up and passed him with 1 mile to go. He told me later that he had no clue how fast he was running, since he wasn’t wearing a watch and he couldn’t hear the mile splits with his headphones on. Surprisingly, my time (24:43) was good enough for 3rd in my age group.
